CBD for Dogs Scared of Fireworks
If you’ve ever watched your dog react to fireworks, you know the look. The wide eyes. The pacing. The frantic search for a bunker that apparently exists somewhere between your bathtub and the back of the coat closet.
Meanwhile, you’re sitting there in a lawn chair holding a sparkler thinking, “Buddy, I promise we’re not under attack.”
To be fair, if aliens landed tomorrow and started launching loud colorful explosions into the sky, we’d probably have some questions too.
For most dogs, July 4th isn’t a celebration. It’s straight up trauma.
And while we can’t exactly explain patriotism to a Labrador, there are ways we can help them feel safer, calmer, and less convinced that the apocalypse has arrived.
One option many pet parents turn to is CBD.
Let’s dig into what the research says, how it may help, and how CBD products can become part of your dog’s July 4th survival kit.

Why Fireworks Are So Stressful for Dogs
Dogs hear frequencies we can’t. Their hearing is significantly more sensitive than ours, which means fireworks don’t sound like festive background noise, they sound more like someone repeatedly dropping a dumpster off a cliff.
The unpredictability is part of the problem. Unlike thunder, fireworks don’t follow a natural pattern. They’re sudden, random, loud, and often accompanied by flashes of light and unfamiliar smells.
It’s no surprise that nearly half of dogs show signs of fear or anxiety during loud-noise events like fireworks. Common signs include:
- Trembling
- Panting
- Pacing
- Hiding
- Excessive barking
- Clinginess
- Attempts to escape
In fact, animal shelters often see a significant increase in lost pets around July 4th because frightened dogs try to run from the noise🥺
Which is a good reminder that if your dog can somehow open doors, climb fences, and perform feats of athleticism usually reserved for Olympic decathletes during fireworks season, you’re not imagining it.
Fear is a very powerful motivator😵

What the Research Says
In a 2023 blinded study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, researchers evaluated dogs experiencing two common stressors: being left alone and riding in a car. Dogs receiving CBD showed improvements in several physiological and behavioral measures of stress, including cortisol levels, heart rate variability, whining behavior, and anxious behavioral scores compared to placebo. The researchers concluded that CBD demonstrated measurable effects on canine stress responses. (Source)
Researchers at the University of Kentucky specifically investigated CBD’s effects on dogs exposed to a noise-induced fear test. Dogs receiving CBD-containing treats exhibited changes in emotional responses to the fear-inducing stimulus, suggesting cannabinoids may influence how dogs process stressful environmental triggers. Research on anxiety is still developing, but both veterinarians and pet owners continue to explore CBD as a supportive tool for stress-related situations such as thunderstorms, travel, separation anxiety, and fireworks.
The important thing to know is this:
CBD is not a canine off-switch. If your dog is already convinced the neighborhood is under siege, CBD probably won’t transform them into a Zen master floating six inches above their dog bed.
What it may do is help take the edge off, support a calmer stress response, and help them recover more quickly from triggering events – which is consistent with what many dog owners report anecdotally.

Zen Dog CBD Treats
Most dogs aren’t sitting around wondering whether their wellness routine contains clinically relevant phytocannabinoids. They’re wondering if that thing in your hand is edible.
That’s where Zen Dog comes in.
Our organic CBD dog treats provide 4mg of full-spectrum CBD per treat and were designed specifically for dogs dealing with stressors like separation anxiety, thunderstorms, and fireworks – as well as for pups dealing with inflammation / arthritis!
They’re gluten-free, vegan, organic, made with ingredients you can actually recognize, and shaped like a cute lil heart🥹 (This is more for delighting us than for benefitting them – it’s the little things🤷🏻♀️)
For many dogs, a treat feels less like “supplement time” and more like “I have won a prize for being adorable.”
Which, to be fair, they probably have.
Grounded TONIC
Grounded TONIC is our CBD oil we recommend for pups – but for them it’s called Grrrounded 😂 get it?
It can be used in two ways:
Internally
Add the appropriate serving directly into your dog’s mouth or mix it into food (start with a couple drops then work your way up while monitoring their response – see more about this below)
Many pet parents choose to give Grounded about an hour before anticipated stressors – including vet/groomer visits!
Topically
One of our favorite tricks from years of customer feedback is applying Grounded directly to your dog’s ears like this.
The ears contain numerous blood vessels close to the skin’s surface, making them a convenient place to gently massage in the oil. We’re told the pups love the soothing ear rub almost as much as the CBD itself.
Honestly, if someone gave us a calming herbal supplement and a relaxing ear massage during a stressful event, we’d probably feel better too.
Zen Dog + Grrrounded Bundle
Can’t decide? Get the bundle + save!
The Zen Dog + Grrrounded bundle comes with a full size bag of Zen Dog (20 treats) and a mini 5mL Grounded.
How Much CBD Should You Give Your Dog?
Finding the right dose for your dog may take some experimenting, but the best advice we can give is to start low and go slow. Dogs, cats, and humans all metabolize cannabinoids differently, but the general concepts remain the same:
- Start with a low dose, administered consistently for about 5 days. If you feel like it’s not doing the trick, start to increase the dosage and monitor for any change.
- Continue this process until you find your dog’s ideal dose.
- Pain and inflammation usually respond better to a higher dose.
- Anxiety can be addressed with a somewhat smaller dose, but this seems to be where a lot of the variability comes into play.
- We have had customers with german shepherds get fantastic results with a single 4mg Zen Dog treat, but we’ve also seen shih tzus that need 2 of those treats for the same result!
- CBD is non-toxic meaning there is no risk of overdose. Signs that your dog might have had too much CBD include them getting super sleepy and, more rarely, an upset stomach.
A Few More Ways to Help Your Dog This July 4th
CBD works best as part of a larger calming strategy.
Veterinary experts also recommend:
- Creating a safe, cozy retreat space
- Closing windows and curtains
- Playing white noise, calming music, or television
- Exercising your dog earlier in the day
- Offering enrichment toys or long-lasting chews
- Staying home with your dog if possible
- Making sure collars, tags, and microchip information are current
In other words, don’t wait until the first explosion rattles the windows to start thinking about your game plan.
Your dog deserves better preparation than most of us give ourselves for holiday weekends.

To Recap
Fireworks may be a blast for humans, but for many dogs they’re the equivalent of an unsolicited nervous breakdown delivered directly to their ears.
While no supplement can guarantee a stress-free July 4th, research suggests CBD may help support a calmer, more balanced response to stressful situations. When paired with thoughtful preparation, a safe environment, and a little extra TLC, it can become a valuable tool in your dog’s anxiety toolkit.
So this Independence Day, while the neighbors celebrate with Roman candles and questionable decisions involving lighter fluid, consider giving your pup a little extra support.
Because freedom is great, but feeling safe enough to stop hiding behind the toilet is worth celebrating too.
