Find Calm in the Chaos with these 6 Centering Techniques

October 18, 2023

Centering is a practice that helps you clear out the noise and tune into yourself and your surroundings more clearly.

Refocusing your energy helps you overcome stress, allowing you to navigate obstacles calmly and effectively.

Most of us are off-center most of the time, but the good news is that center is always within reach. It’s a state we can access at any time with tools like these:

Slow Down

When you feel yourself in chaos mode – jumping from task to task, unable to focus on one thing, heart racing, mind scattered – actively pull yourself out of the rush & pump those brakes a bit.

Take a step back from what you are doing for 5 minutes and then go back to it with a clearer head.

Studies have shown that you can increase productivity by working in 25 minute blocks with 5 minute breaks in between.

Breathe

Deep, intentional breaths stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system – also known as the ‘rest and digest’ system.

Deep breathing lets our bodies know that we’re safe and that our ‘fight or flight’ response is no longer needed.

Breathe ion & out through your nose, feeling your belly fill with each inhale & contract with each exhale.

Inhale for 1-2-3-4. Hold for 1-2. Exhale 1-2-3-4. Repeat x5.

Focus on Your Surroundings

Observing your environment & your place within it helps you recenter in the present moment. The 5-4-3-2-1 mindfulness technique is a tried and true way to center yourself in the here & now by tuning into your senses & identifying:

5 things you can see

4 things you can hear

3 things you can feel

2 things you can smell

1 thing you can taste

Observe Your Thoughts

Pay attention to the thoughts running through your head when your feeling off center and stressed out. Identifying your thoughts can help you make sense of them & take away their power.

*Remember: you re not your thoughts, you are the observer of your thoughts.

What emotions are attached to those thoughts? Feel them without judgment.

Acknowledge the thoughts, the feelings, then let them pass.

Be Grateful

Studies actually prove that practicing gratitude helps alleviate anxiety, mitigate stress, and promote emotional well being.

Drawing your attention to the food things in your life recenter your focus on what is truly most important to you.

When you’re feeling off-center, state 3 things that you are grateful for.

What do you love most about your life?
What do you take for granted?

Why made you laugh recently?

Write it all down and allow yourself to really feel it.
