What Causes Chronic Inflammation?
Most Americans suffer from chronic inflammation because of the Standard American Diet, or ‘SAD’ (in more ways than one). The majority of Americans consume too many refined sugars and carbohydrates, chemicals, preservatives and hormones, while not consuming enough antioxidants and nutrients.
Everyday exposure to toxins like BPAs in plastic water bottles, general air pollution, and trace amounts of heavy metals and pesticides in our food supply can all add up to be a significant source of inflammation.
Stress and Poor Sleep
Another big inflammation booster is stress. Cortisol, the stress hormone, becomes chronically elevated during times of prolonged stress. When cortisol spikes, your immune system and adrenals go into overdrive in response to the “DANGER” message they are receiving. The danger in chronic stress and chronically elevated cortisol is that overdrive turns to burnout quicker than you’d think.
Fight or flight mode kicks on in a big way when cortisol levels are up. Your system assumes if you’re that stressed, then there must be an emergency that needs immediate attention for the sake of survival. In response, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in and is ready to do 1 of 2 things: fight for survival, or run.
